" Note: Two books are the source of the "English Stockton" information. In 1881, J.W. Stockton wrote "A History of the Stockton Family", published by Press > of Patterson & White, Philadelphia. It was followed in 1888 by William Francis Cregar's "The Stockton Family in England and the United States", also published by Patterson & White.
Mr. J. W. Stockton allowed Mr. Cregar to use the notes he had made in preparing his book. While they agree on the English records, Mr. Cregar was unable to find any record to prove Mr. Stockton's conclusion that Richard Stockton "the immigrant" was born in 1606 and was the son of John Stockton of Malpas Parish, Cheshire, England. IN FACT, he disproves is by proving this John Stockton had only 2 sons, Thomas and Owen.

The John Stockton who died in 1643, has two brass plates in the church at Malpas. The smaller reads, "Here is buried, Owen Stockton, Gentleman, who deceased ye second day of December, 1610, and John Stockton, his eldest soune, who deceased ye eighteenth day of June, 1643." The larger; [translated from Latin] "In Memoriam Sacrum. I, Stocktonus, ever a most gentle promoter of peace, here laid under the hard marble, enjoy peace. The Thirtieth year of me bereft [by death of his wife], of an unblemished reputation, sees my offspring flourishing, my father dead. Departing, I have left behine me as many tears as though peace were about to leave [this earth]. I obatin the promised reward in the peaceful Heavens. The son well-born has erected this to the father well-born [who] died December 2d, A.D., 1610".
This John Stockton was the eldest son of Owen Stockton who died in 1610. This John's wife died 30 years before he did, in 1613. Mr. Cregar
searched English records and found the Heralds College Visitation of 1613 which lists John Stockton, of Keddington, wife Sarah, daughter of John Hawkeshead of County Salop, and two sons, Thomas, the eldest, age 4 and Owen, age 2. John did not remarry after Sarah's death, and did not have a son Richard.

The Stockton Family of New Jersey and Other Stocktons, 1911, Thomas Coates Stockton, M.D., Carnahan Press, Washington, D.C. cites both books and says Richard Stockton is DESCENDED from John Stockton of Malpas, England.

The parents of Richard Stockton 'the American immigrant' remain unknown."
