KNIGHT, Thomas [106] 1
- Born: 1654 ?, Cork Co, Ireland 2
- Marriage: HUNTER, Hannah [219] 1
- Died: After 1711
General
Notes:
There are problems with my
ancestor Thomas :
Thomas was living in Bandon Bridge (Droichead na Bandon), Cork Co, Ireland
Bet. 1686-1711 (see after)
- According to my family bible and certified by my uncle, ambassador
Ridgway Brewster KNIGHT (in 19670, before the web...), Thomas married
Hannah HUNTER, daughter of Peter and Jane LIE (LEE), who give him his
son, John KNIGHT probably born in 1685 (IGI records)
- According to "FamilySearch IGI records" and other sources on the web
: a Thomas KNIGHT, born 1665 in Ireland, living in Cork Co, married
Martha ALLYN (ALLIN) in 1686. They say Thomas had 11 children. 2 of
them had a birth date prob. before his marriage with Martha ALLYN :
John and Martha. In an other "FamilySearch IGI records" a Thomas KNIGHT
maried a Martha Allin in 1737 !...
So I suppose that Thomas was first married with Hannah HUNTER who died
1685/1686 and then married Martha ALLYN in 1686 !
Possible birth : <http://www.familysearch.org> 1654
Possible death : Ancestry.com / Family Data Collection - Deaths : 7
August 1726

"The names Knight and McKnight in Ireland are derived from the native
Gaelic Sept Mac An Ridire. The Gaelic word 'ridire' means 'knight'.
Ruddery is used interchangeably with Knight. The Sept was mainly located
in County Westmeath and was a branch of the Fitzsimons Sept."
But I think our ancestor, a quaker, came from England (?)

"The name of Knight was common in some parts of England more than two
hundred years ago. In 1663, Sir John Knight was Mayor of the town of
Bristol. A few years after, another John Knight was Vicar of Banbury.
We also find notice of many persons named Knight who were among the
early converts to the doctrines of George Fox; and in the record of
the sufferings of Friends during the reign of Charles II, are the names
of Thomas Knight, of Cirencester; William Knight, of Hamshire; George
Knight and Mary Knight, of London or Middlesex; Robert Knight, of Oxford,
and Giles Knight, of Chesselborough, in Somersetshire. Most of these
were apprehended at religious meetings, and, for refusing to take the
oath of allegiance, were committed to prison."
