Ancestors of Mary RIDGWAY

This pedigree of the Ridgway family is given by the Rev Edward Coolbaugh Hoagland, in his book published in 1958: "Twigs from Family Trees, Notes on the Ridgway Families of Bradford County, PA, Descendants of David, Richard, Robert and Burr Ridgway Pioneers"

He states about the ancestors of the American Ridgway family: 'Ridgway and Ridgeway are of local origin, from the residence at "the ridge-way" or the road over the back of the hill. In the earliest records this name was written "Rydeware". The accounts of this ancient family have been written by various historians, but in the "Ridgway Family Manuscript" by James Ridgeway, to be found in the Long Island, NY Historical Society is the following: the pedigree of the family is best given by Sir Thomas de Rydeware in the "Chartulary" prepared by him at great length in 1308, and which was published in the "History and Antiquity of Leicester" by John Nicholas, vol. III, part 2, pp. 983,984,999-1007,979, 994, and which we have followed as the basis of this history down to the children of Sir Thomas de Rydeware.

A less extensive but similar pedigree appears in Glover's "History of Derby". Sir Thomas de Rydeware carried his pedigree back to Asser, in the time of the Conquest. The earliest account of the family extant is that which is given by the great antiquarian authority Sir William Dugdale, in his "Baronage of England" under the title of Earls of Chester; and also in his famous work the "Honastician Angelicantum". There he gives a record of Leofric I who signs himself Earl of Leicester in the year 716 (the first who bore that title) and who was also Earl of Chester; and a record also of Leofric's descendants and successors to those earldoms continuously down to Eadwyne, at the time of the Conquest, and who was grandson of the renowned Leofric III and Godiva his wife, Countess of Coventry, which Leofric was son of Leofwine; who, from Leofwine to Eadwyne, were, for four generations, Dukes of Mercia, in addition to their earlier titles of Earls of Leicester, Chester, etc.

Those who wish for further information on many of the intermarrying lines down through the generations should be pleased to refer to the compiler's companion volume, "162 Allied Families" pp. 5-34, 82, 83 etc.'

98. POSTREMA SHINN (4).--THOMAS (3), THOMAS (2), JOHN (1).
Postrema, the ninth child and fifth daughter of Thomas and Martha (Earl) Shinn, was born 1/6/1744. She was married to John Ridgway, Surveyor General of New Jersey, in 1764. William John Potts, of Camden, N. J., in Vol. 17, "Pennsylvania Mag. of Hist. and Biog.," page 381, says:
"The writer is acquainted with the various outline genealogies of the Ridgway family, as given by Major E. M. Woodard, and the fragmentary account by Mr. Edwin Salter, as well as the unpublished manuscript pedigree of the late Gideon De la Plaine Scull, which gave the descent of the Scully, Ridgway and other families from the De la Plaines and De Bellange families, as far as could be ascertained. That there were several intermarriages between these old Huguenot names, De la Plaine and De Bellange, and the Ridgways is certain. The Bible record of one family (Ridgway) is here given, in the earnest hope that some one will make the affiliation with the earlier members." 1John Ridgway died 3/4/1809, and his wife, Postrema, died 9/23/1831.

Children of John and Postrema (Shinn) Ridgway.

22. THOMAS SHINN (3).--THOMAS (2), JOHN (1).
Thomas Shinn, son of Thomas and Mary (Stockton) Shinn and grandson of John, the immigrant, has his birth recorded in the Record of Births and Deaths of Burlington Monthly Meeting as having occurred on the 6th of the 11th month, 1694. The same record places his father's death in this wise: "Thomas Shinn lay down this life the (???) of the 9th month, called November, 1695." We have seen what disposition the father made of his estate by will, and have noted the final disposition of the estate by Mary (Stockton) Shinn in 1697, when she married Silas Crispin of Philadelphia. In the will and deed of trust Thomas is mentioned as a son of Thomas and Mary, and the will shows that Thomas was the elder of the two boys.
The subject of our sketch was born and lived throughout the greater part of his life in Springfield Township, Burlington County. Whether he lived with his mother after her marriage to Silas Crispin is not known, and we next meet him in authentic history on the 1st of the 10th month, 1718, when he and Martha Earl declared their intentions of marriage at Burlington Meeting. On the 5th of the 11th month, 1718, the minutes show that he and Martha appeared the second time, and were given liberty to proceed. Shortly after this the marriage occurred. The marriage certificate or record shows that Thomas Shinn, son of Thomas, and Martha, daughter of William Earl,1 were married at the house of William Earl in Springfield Township, on the 22nd day of the 11th month, 1718. It was witnessed by the mother of Thomas, Mary Ridgway, she having married Richard Ridgway after the death of Silas Crispin; by William and Elizabeth Earl, parents of Martha; by John, James and Abigail, his uncles and aunts; by Samuel and Sarah Shinn, his brother and his wife; by George and Levi Shinn, his cousins, and by twenty others. The bride was born in Portsmouth, L. I., but had lived in Springfield Township about all her life. The affair was one of considerable importance and was attended by some of the first people of the County. The solemn Quaker who was appointed by Burlington Meeting to attend reported back on the 12th of the 2nd month, 1718, that "These friends that are under our care and conduct are pretty orderly." The young people had successfully passed the committee report upon the declaration of intention, and likewise the Argus-eyed committee on marriage, and were now ready to settle down to practical life. The possessions of Thomas were in Springfield Township and there he began his career. For eighteen years he is covered by an envelope of impenetrable obscurity, save for an occasional transfer of land which confronts us on the deed records at Trenton. In 1736 he was put on a committee to supervise a marriage, and on the same day was sent to Quarterly Meeting. The inference is that he had lived an honest Christian life and that now in his forty-first year he had gained the confidence of his brethren. About this time he removed to Mt. Holly in Northampton Township,1 and on the 1st of the 6th month he was made an elder by the Burlington meeting. In 1748 he was made one of the Trustees to hold the Mt. Holly Meeting House property. In Vol. III. of the Burlington Minutes among the first items is placed a list of Ministers and Elders who have died since 1720. In this list we have the last notice of Thomas Shinn. He is ranked as an elder, and his death recorded as of date the 27th of the 2nd month, 1753, in the 58th year of his life. It was really the 59th year, but one cannot quarrel with venerable records and escape unscathed.
If we had nothing but the simple record of this man's life as given by the scribes of Burlington Monthly Meeting of Friends, we should ascribe to him qualities.

1"The family of Earls, who now are and for several generations have been Lords
of Heydon Manor, is of great antiquity, and had its origin in the adjacent town of
Salle, which is very remarkable for giving rise to three of the ancient families of
Norfolk County, England, viz.: Fountaine, Briggs and Earl." Bloomfield's History
of Norfolk, Vol. III, p. 531. "Its greatest name was Erasmus Earl, baptized September
20, 1590, died September 7, 1667. He graduated from three schools and practically
monopolized the law business of Norfolk; was secretary for the English at the treaty of Uxbridge; was granted the degree Serjeant at Law; was successively Steward
and Recorder of Norwich; was of Commission of Oyer and Terminer to Norwich and
afterwards to York; was a member of the Long Parliament from Norwich; was
Private Serjeant to Oliver Cromwell and afterwards to Richard and was Serjeant to
the Commonwealth. He was pardoned by Charles H, again granted the degree Serjeant at Law and continued in great reputation to the end of his days. He is buried in the East Chapel of the North Isle under an exceedingly large tomb, over which is the mural monument with his arms and a long inscription." Bloomfield, Vol. II,
p. 531.

It is a tradition in the New Jersey family that it sprang from Norfolk County, but
the author of "Ralph Earl and His Descendants" holds that it is a tradition in the
Massachusetts family that it sprang from Somerset County, near Exeter. William
Earl of Springfield Township, N. J., was a grandson of Ralph Earle of Taunton, Mass.
William was a ship owner and carried on a trade for many years between Massachusetts and New Jersey. In 1697 he removed to New Jersey and purchased land in Springfield Township, upon which he lived until his death. One of his first acts after his change of residence was to change the spelling of his name by dropping the finale, a change which his descendants have respected and followed for more than two centuries.
Whether Ralph Earle migrated from Norfolk or Somerset is a matter of little
consequence. The Earles in England now have a habitat in nearly all of its southern
counties and run back into time when the Saxons were masters of the land.
William was a Quaker and never had much respect for Massachusetts, his birthplace, on account of its narrow religious spirit.

Richard Ridgway {RIN# 4673} (The Ancestry of Mary Ridgeway) :

According to the "Book of Arrivals" for Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Richard Ridgway and Elizabeth (Chamberlain), his wife, of Welford in the County of Berks (Berkshire), England, Taylor (tailor), arrived in the Delaware River in the ship, Jacob and Mary, from London on the 12th day 7th month 1679, with their son, Thomas. The ship's master was Richard Moore.
The "Book of Arrivals" was prepared in 1684 under Pennsylvania law requiring registration of all residents. The data is considered to be very accurate.
The Jacob and Mary probably landed its passengers near Burlington, a few miles below the falls in the river. Richard's first home was on 218 acres at the Delaware River Falls on the Pennsylvania shore just opposite the east end of Biles Island. He sold the land to Daniel Gardner and John Luff, Jan 2, 1681, moving to a new tract about two miles upstream, in or near what is now Morrisville, opposite modernday Trenton. The locality of these two homesites was then known as Crewcorne (variously spelled), named by William Penn whose estate was adjoining.
The records show that Richard was quite active in the affairs of the community while living at the falls. He joined with other settlers at the Falls in signing petitions April 12 and Sep 13, 1680, to the Governor of New Yorke "finding ourselves aggrieved by ye Indians when drunk, informeth, that wee be and have been in great danger of our lives, of our houses burning, of our goods stealing, and of our wives and children affrighting...." The principal offender was Gilvert Wheeler at whose house, they claimed, the indians obtained their liquor and made themselves drunk, revel and fight together, come furiously and break our fences, steal our corn, break our windows and doors, carry away our goods and worry three of our cattle in one day with their dogs. (Ref: New York Colonial Manuscripts, Vol XII, pp , Ferrow, 1877.)
Richard registered his private cattle mark in the "Ear Mark Book" of Bucks County, now in the county historical society collection. These marks were necessary for locating ones strays due to the lack of fencing at the time.
After William Penn's arrival, a license system was adopted which made selling of strong drink to the Indians a crime. An entry in the minutes of the Council of Philadelphia, Feb 3, 1686, reads: " Report being made by ye members of Bucks County, that Richard Ridgway is a fitt person for ye keeping of an ordinary in ye County, a Lycense accordingly." His establishment was called Crown Inn.
In the Records of the Courts of Quarter Sessions and Commin Pleas and other records of Bucks County, we learn that Richard served as a juror in 1681, 1685, 1686; a jury foreman in 1688; as attorney for defendants in 1686, 1687; an estate appraiser in 1687; witnessed a will; made an estate inventory; served as a "Viewer of fences from ye falls to ye Governor's Mansion" in 1686; and served as witness on several occasions. His wife, Elizabeth, appeared as a witness several times and her mother, Elizabeth Hickman, appeared at least once.
An interesting sidelight appears in the minutes for the Falls Monthly Meeting of Friends, 4th day 10th mo. 1689: Elizabeth, wife of Richard Ridgway, hath fought with her neighbor Chorley's wife, and women friends have spoken with her and that they find her stubborn, wilful and obstinate and that she justifies the act. Therefore it is agreed that for the present the meeting be removed from the house of Richard Ridgway to the home of Allice Dickerson. (Bucks Co. Historical Society)
Land deeds relative to Richard Ridgway and his sons are too numerous to cover in detail; only selected ones will be noted. In a deed dated Oct 7, 1690, Richard Ridgway, late of Bucks County, Pa., tailor now of West Jersey, acquired from Daniel Coxe of London (by his attorney John Tatum of Burlington) the 600 acres near Stoney Brook, West Jersey, along the East Jersey line, next to John Houghton, part of Thomas Budd's Indian purchase, conveyed to present grantor. (West Jersey RFeocrds - Liber B, Part 2, p. 398, p. 450.) This was to be Richard's third home in America. In early terms, it was on Stony Brfook in Maidenhead Twp, Middlesex County, NJ. Today it would be on the road between Princeton and Lawrenceville in Mercer County.
In the minutes of a town meeting at the house of John Lambert in Nottingham (Twp, North Crosswicks, Burlington County) Richard Ridgway was chosen as Overseer for the "Wayes" beyond (the Assanpink in Middlesex County.)
On March 17, 1695 he sold 400 acres of the Stoney Brook land to John Bainbridge, and on July 6, 1696 the remaining 200 acres to Joseph Sackett. On Feb 7, 1697, for 320 pounds, he purchased 600 acres from Hollingshead, Jr., on Mattacopany Creek, Springfield Twp, Burlington County (1979) location: near Village of Jacksonville on the road from Burlington to Jobstown). This became his fourth and final home in the New World.
Richard served as Justice of the peace for Burlington County in 1703, 1715, and 1719.>/p>
Richard gave one acre to the Quakers for a meeting house and burying ground. It is known as the "Copany" or "Old Springfield" (Preparative) Meeting of the Burlington Monthly Meeting. The old meeting house, second structure on the site was erected in 1775, still stands today, having been converted to a private home.
Richard's will (#1055 c., New Jersey State Library, Trenton, NJ) was dated September 21, 1722 and probated April 5, 1723. (A minimum of spelling has been adjusted, punctuation added, etc., to facilitate comprehension. This note by the Editor of the Book" Ridgways U.S.A.)

The inventory of Richard's estate is too difficult to read to be quoted in its entirety, but some of the items are listed for the insight they give into the daily life of our early forebears:

General Notes: From The Cocks....Genealogy of Long Island, by George William Cocks: CLARKE LINEAGE
The problem of the ancestry of Sarah, wife of James Cock the immigrant, seems nearest to solution, with the assumption that she was of the Clarke family, living contemporaneously with the Cocks at Southhold, LI. The persistence of the use of the Christian names Clark, Samuel and Richard in several generations of the Cock family, suggested an examination of sundry Clarke records, wherein these and several other concurrent names were found both male and female. Other evidence, pointing to a former residence at Rhode Island, indicates that Sarah's father was very probably a near relative of Dr. John 4 Clarke, (Thomas 3, John 2, John 1)

"The Cox Family in America, Page 11-- Nothing is known regarding the ancestral relations of Sarah the wife of James Cock. No reasonable suggestion of consanguinity with any of the neighboring families at either of the places at which he was settled has been heard. The temporary occupancy of Thomas Mapes' house and lot at Southold by James Cock, and the appearance together of the names of Mapes and Cock in their progress westward, seem to suggest a possible connection of some kind, but no proof appears.
John Bayles likewise coming to Southold via the Bermudas, whose children intermarried with the Mapes family and removed westward on Long Island coincident with James Cock, might possibly have been Sarah's ancestor, but proof is lacking.
Since writing the foregoing the compilers think they have had sufficient reason to believe that the family name of Sarah, the wife of James Cock, was Clarke, probably sister of Samuel Clarke, of North Sea, Southampton, Long Island, N. Y."

In the spring of 1677 two hundred and thirty Quakers left London on the ship Kent for West Jersey. Half of these were from London and the other half from Yorkshire. Smith, in his "History of Nova C‘sarea; or, New Jersey," gives a partial list of these emigrants, but the name of John Shinn does not appear therein. He also says that these chose as a landing place the spot where Burlington now stands, and there began a settlement, which they named New Beverley; this was afterwards changed to Bridlington, after a town in Yorkshire, from whence many of the settlers came, and subsequently to Burlington. Smith also gives partial lists of emigrants who followed these in the year 1678, and in a general way names others who came between 1678 and 1680. In this general list will be found the name of John Shinn. In the old records of Burlington now in the office of the Secretary of State at Trenton, showing the freeholders for the year 1680, the names of "John Sheen" and "Clement Sheen" appear. The same records show that in the same year John Sheen was a grand juror.
